Using one of the first artificial intelligence image generators available to the public in 2022, I prompted AI to produce portraits of shelter dogs. The images came out wonky and weird. It seemed AI couldn’t distinguish where the bars of the cage ended, and the dog begun. The dogs appear to melt into their kennel.

I felt these results spoke volume about the life of shelter dogs, who spend so much time (sometimes years) in their cage, it is no wonder AI couldn’t separate the two. I turned these portraits into oil paintings, to materialize and instill permanence into these images.
